Getting back to an older topic, Thad brought up the idea of deprecating lots of
functions inf
favor of GUI components that do the same thing, and functions in general in favor of
GUI
components. I would like to keep the functions around, because:

1. In general, functions are easier for developers to write (I think we've seen ample
evidence of
this, as several of the functions were written by new contributors, GUI's not so
much). This
provides a good mechanism to get new ideas added to JMeter from which more experienced
JMeter developers can then take and convert them into GUI components for easier use by
others.

2. So, why keep the functions around after a GUI has been made that does the same
thing?
        a. backwards compatibility for anyone previously using the function
        b. some people probably prefer the functions, as they don't clutter the GUI as
much,
and are quicker to work with if you know them well.
        c. There are times when only a function will do - such as putting functions
into the User
Parameter table, giving people the ability to create new functionality by combining
things that
developers didn't envision being combined (and often finding new bugs in the process
that
developers get to fix!).

I hope this made sense.
