Add ability to set user defined variables from cmd. line

[At present the function is documented to return the property name if the
property is not defined.]

Do you mean that you want to be able to supply a default value which will be
returned if the property is not defined?

At presemt, the second parameter is currently the name of a variable to store
the result in.

So are you suggesting that this is replaced by the default value, or are you
suggesting that a new parameter is introduced to store the default value?

[I don't mind which is done.]
