I too was guessing regexp would be faster. But what I'm seeing is that it's only marginally faster, so it's not worth the added difficulty -- I absolutely agree it is more difficult. I was thinking that the improved performance could compensate for the difficulty, but doesn't seem to be the case -- a 20% improvement doesn't justify anything.
