Can we now assume that 1.4 is the minimum version required? This would allow us to tidy up various aspects of the build (e.g. chained exceptions and some methods which now have charset parameters, etc), and I think we might be able to dispense with the xalan, xerces and xml-apis jars. [I marked most of the work-rounds with "JDK 1.4"]
But it might be a good idea to hold off these less essential changes until we've migrated to SVN. S.
