I changed java and javac to point to binaries from the jdk-1.6.0_01-fcs RPM, and now I see rendered HTML when engaging the help system. Section 2.1.1 "Java Version" of http://jakarta.apache.org/jmeter/usermanual/get-started.html says "Use the latest version of Java 1.4 or 1.5 for best results".
