Christians, I have a requirement for this as well, and was planning on starting development on this next week. The core would be plain-old XML, and I'm sure we could extend this to support SOAP, etc..
I'll keep you (and the list) posted - although any more new functionality should definitely not be rolled in until 1.7 rolls out the door.. Need to nail down the last few bugs..
