The remote engine thing is pure GUI code. It will not
work with the command line.

I've got a patch to allow starting of remote engines
simultaneously from the GUI that I am going to commit
to CVS tonight. It definitely will not work from the
command line.

I created this patch because I'm running a distributed
testing environment and I couldn't click on each
remote fast enough to get a decent amount of
concurrent usage.

I didn't experience the data loss you are talking
about, but I might not have noticed. I was just
getting the test lab up and running when I got pulled
off of the load testing project, but hopefully I will
get back to it in a few weeks.
