I'm not sure it was OOM error but I've been doing this long enough to know
the signs. I didn't want to post the logs here because it annoys me when
people post anything over 30K like large attachments to email lists. I
usually just throw the file on my web site and post the link but I'm at work
and don't have access to my site. I wanted to. :(

I changed the vm args to include -Xms256M and -Xmx256M and it seems to have
solved a lot of problems, including this one.
I'll post the pertinent stack trace errors if they pop up again. Off the top
of my head they seemed to hover around, what sounded like, some kind of GUI
factory object.

Yes, for such a big test plan, OOM is definitely a possiblity. Touch the 
ARGS in bin/jmeter[.bat] to increase the available memory. There's 
comments in bin/jmeter explaining which arguments to touch at.
