I'm not sure it was OOM error but I've been doing this long enough to know the signs. I didn't want to post the logs here because it annoys me when people post anything over 30K like large attachments to email lists. I usually just throw the file on my web site and post the link but I'm at work and don't have access to my site. I wanted to. :(
I changed the vm args to include -Xms256M and -Xmx256M and it seems to have solved a lot of problems, including this one. I'll post the pertinent stack trace errors if they pop up again.
