Hi Mark,
I've seen such a behavior in the past when a tester was using JMeter under Java 
1.3.
If you have older Java versions installed on your desktop, beside the 1.5 
you've mentioned, would you please verify you really use the 1.5?

It must presumably be a machine configuration issue ...

A few random thoughts:

- antivirus/spyware detector?
- DNS problems?
- background processes on desktop?
- different browser versions or settings (try a different browser?)
