I checked the things you specified like

I have given for server name as jakarta.apache.org in HTTP REQUEST DEFAULTS.
and for HTTP REQUSET I have given port : 80 and protocol : http and path as
/.
May you help what else do I need to set.

Working fine.
I sugest to check setting in http sampler: host, port, protocol, path etc.
