I think the user manual is misleading. We don't need to do anything with sslmanager just to connect to some https urls. The TrustManager that jmeter uses is always trusting. So I think we don't need to get the public key from the web server and set javax.net.ssl.trustStore, either. You probably failed for other reasons. In my case, once I figured this out, I simply ignored the sslmanager and my http request to the https url worked without doing extra things.
