If this can help you, for windows I do the next:

Run "cygwin" with this packages: OpenSSH, X11 (Xorg-X11-base), joe, vi,
nano, the text editor that you want to use.

In the command-line from cygwin run:
        startx
        xhost +
        ssh <user>@<ip-jmeter-machine>
        In the new remote session:
                export DISPLAY=<ip-from-your-machine>:0.0
                Go to the Jmeter 'bin' dir, and run "./jmeter"

With linux I suppose to be the same except for cygwin.
