I've done some tests on the String(data, charset) method call, and invalid UTF-8 characters don't generate an error - they just get converted into "?".
However, I have just noticed that the charset is enclosed in quotes. I had assumed that these were added by the error message, but it seems not. This explains the problem - utf-8 is valid, but "utf-8" is not valid. It would be helpful if you could use the View Results Tree Listener to see what the Content-Type: header says.
