Hi Sebb - Glad to provide an update on this. 

I'm afraid a one-CPU Windows VMWare test isn't possible at the moment as
I've spent a lot of time on it, but I hope to stress test it on VmWare
one day.

Thanks, useful to know that the problem was not purely because of
running JMeter on Linux.

Maybe adding the second CPU gives more resources for the JVM to do
garbage collection?

I wonder what would happen if Windows were restricted to one CPU?
