It is usually used to load test web sites or web applications. When
doing this, it creates workload in the same way as a web browser - it
makes many HTTP requests at the same time, and measures how long it
takes for the response to come back..
However, it can also be used to test non-HTTP applications. You'll have
to ask something more specific than "how does it work"...
