Not mentioned: use the workbench to migrate data from elements saved to the working test plan.
Example: you save a thread group or a controller that performs a test-case-a1. Merge them in the workbench then copy paste what you need to the new test plan. In order to be able to migrate settings you must use User Defined Variables and not put your variables directly in the test plan. It is also possible to merge two test plans, but I find it to be tricky. if you have a new test plan and you want to take most of a previous test plan just merge the old test plan, than remove what you don't need.
