I cannot speak for Ubuntu, but in Debian, the Jmeter packages just aren't worth the hassle. Simplest thing for me is to 1. install sun-java6 via apt 2. download jmeter, uncompress to /usr/local and launch from there As often with java stuff, the self-contained packages directly from the vendor work best.
