Tested with JDK regexp with this expression :
<span class=\"x6\">([0-9]{1,6})</span>
The result is in group[1]

Gives all groups for every pattern matching 
 group[0]=<span class="x6">1819</span>
 group[1]=1819
Jmeter uses ORO regexp, and as i know there is a regexp tester in Jmeter 2.4
