Jan explained it to me. The answer is that the browser uses its "conforming" processor instead of its "quirks" processor, and all you can do is cross your fingers and hope it flies.


I agree with you, but we aren't completely lost.
On http://www.quirksmode.org in the section "Browsers" - "Current Browsers"
you can find further information about 'Doctype switching'.
Additionally during debugging Jmol.js, it might be useful to enable a popup
alert with the value of 'document.compatMode'.
