I successfully did the following using straight Win32 ... no cygwin.

 - installed Sun j2sdk 1.4.2_01
 - installed Ant 1.5.4
 - downloaded http://jmol.sf.net/demo/jmol/jmol.jar
 - ran jmol.jar

 - used anonymous cvs to get the current Jmol-HEAD source code
 - compiled it
 - ran it

Based upon this experience, I updated the JmolDevelopersGuidebook
documentation under
  http://jmol.sf.net/doc
