Summary: rods or struts

Initial Comment:
I would like to be able to select two atoms and connect them with a
solid rod. this is indepedent of whether or not the atoms are
bonded or within any defined distance of each other.

why?
I am building a Jmol-based interface to design physical models.
many physical models require 'struts' for structural support. up until
now, we have used moniter lines as struts, in a special build of
RasMol which can render monitors at any thickness (not just dotted).

Miguel, is this complicated? maybe I try it myself with a little
direction?

thanks,

tim driscoll

Unless there is good reason to do otherwise, the easiest way
to do this is by adding this as a bond.

Once the bond is defined, Jmol will draw it regardless of
how long it is.

What do you think about this? ... extend the 'connect'
command to take two atom numbers ... the same numbers that
we would use for monitor

You can then make an explicit bond between these atoms.

Once it is added, it acts like every other bond.

The other approach would be to define a new object ... a
rod. It would run from one arbitrary 3D coordinate to
another. It would be more flexible, but would be a *lot*
more work.
