wouldn't it be reasonable to have a param=filetype value=xxx so that that part
of the code could be skipped? I suppose it is fast, but if you DO know the file
type, why guess?

The problematic .cif files that you sent can now be read. The code is
checked into CVS.
Per my previous message, the two problems were both Jmol bugs.
1. ModelResolver gave up when it saw so many comment lines at the begining
of the file.
2. The parser had bugs related to the fact that the file format does not
have a clear 'end-of-block' marker.
Let me know if/when you encounter other problems.
