Yes, unless there is another way to get it. I know you are thinking in terms of huge PDB files, but there are many smaller files that people would be using. In nec, there could be a maximum number of bytes, say 30K.

Must have been something else. As a plug-in, Chime can write files to disk. As an applet, I understand that Jmol can't, but still there is much use for seeing the data and often saving it to disk. Right now I don't see how this is possible in Jmol, but I would imagine since the rasmol header is "showable" that whole files would be also. If there is no other way, then a simple addition of "show file" would be useful.
Q: Should I remove the "show animation" documentation? Should it be modified in Eval.java?
The show() function has a case Token.animation, so I assume that means you can say
show animation
but I don't see what that does/would do. My question simply relates to how you see it fitting into documentation. My thought was that I should just ignore it. I see now that it is just a placeholder. OK. (It's not like I wanted it...)

I don't understand what you are asking.
If 'show animation' exists in Chime then it should exist in Jmol.
If it is broken (or not implemented) in Jmol then you should file a bug report to the Jmol bug database.
Q: What use is "show model"?
I have no idea. It probably existed in RasMol and/or Chime, so I put it there as a placeholder.
Today, there is no other way to know how many models there are in a file.
