Note that many most open source JVM's use Classpath, which actually provides 
97% or more of Java1.4 [1]! Including Swing stuff... e.g. JChemPaint *can* be 
run with these free tools!

I've been running trying to run the Jmol application with open source JVM's 
too:

The application currently does *not* run (see first link), but that's actually 
caused by the application wrapper around the renderer. The renderer itself 
*does* run with open source... see screenshots.

Yes. It's called: gcjwebplugin -> http://www.nongnu.org/gcjwebplugin/

There is a debian package for it. Have not tried it myself on Jmol yet.

But since the renderer is working, I actually think it should run with this 
plugin too.
