Egon, I was not aware of:

Now, the problem is to get JavaScript to spit valid XML.
It's not a problem at all for my JavaScript to spit out well-formed or DocBook XML. It just hasn't been requested. If you show me what you want, I can certainly have the JavaScript to that. Sorry I didn't make this clear initially.

The system is ugly, and rather ad hoc, but comes down to this:
