I don't think that this mechanism is a direct replacement for the callback
mechanism.

Rather, it is a general mechanism for querying information about the
currently loaded model. It is targeted at external programs ... Java &
JavaScript.

I think that it is related to the callback mechanism in that the callback mechanism (and 'show') is currently the only way to get information about
the model and the state of the display.

my interpretation and my mistake; thanks for clarifying, and sorry for putting words in your mouth. from under my hat as a resource developer, the result may be the same - switching the way I query the model for information. right?
