Thank you for reporting these problems.

I am not observing this. Please confirm that you still have this problem
after confirming that you are consistent with the current repository.

I did observe this.
This is a problem that I introduced last nite when I was cutting out old
code in the preferences dialog of the application. I introduced this
problem by eliminating the initialization of the background color.

I have fixed this problem and checked it in.
