Yes, I was pretty sure that some files were there for a good reason and should be kept, that's why I asked.



A consideration of why may want to 'hang on' to them is that when a
newer version of software comes out and assuming that their input
files do not change, a newer output file can be generated and checked
for compatibility. It may make figuring out which modifications need
to be made to support the new output files too a bit easier.

What do you think of adding a small README.txt file in the gaussian directory just to know that these files are indeed useful ?

That would be fine, but we could consider having a subdirectory that stores the input files that generated the output files one level up. I think this really only is an issue for readers that deal with computational packages or conversion programs.
