With transparency on, I think Jmol doesn't erase the background before

In an other application, you can draw something before and let Jmol draw
over it (where Jmol draws nothing, you can still the background you have

I agree that it is not at all useful in its present form, within the
context of the applet or standalone application. It only makes sense
