Jmol itself does not manage the event handler for popup events. There were a number of reasons for this, many of which are probably not valid anymore. It should probably be rethought after we drop support for 1.1 JVMs at the end of 2006. But, that does not help you in the interim ... You need to create a JmolStatusListener object that will receive notification of the popup event and then tell the popup to show itself. Look at src/org/jmol/applet/Jmol.java for an example. > 2.
