Be aware that an X-server running on the server may not be enough: in a project 
I worked on before, we got problems when no-one was logged in directly on the 
server (no X-session running). That's why we set up Xvfb to run permanently 
just for this kind of things.

Can you create a bug report in Sourceforge ?
I will try to investigate on this by looking at the source code. I hope that it 
will be enough because I don't have access to an SGI computer.
