Texture mapping allows one to put an image on a shape. People use this technique
in OpenGL to create attractive game environment. I found Jmol's graphics engine is
very good and can be used as a general graphics tool beyond molecular visualization.

I guess Miguel might have envisioned things like this, as he separated the g3d API from
the viewer.
