Thanks, Angel. Turns out it was just a bug in Jmol. We can have the applet automatically load just the necessary parts.
Try http://www.stolaf.edu/academics/chemapps/jmol/temp/class/simplejar.htm and tell me what you think of the response time. Be sure to also click on GAMESS and CARTOONS to see if there is a significant delay there. I'm seeing loading of this in about 2 seconds here, and 5 seconds if Java first has to load. So that seems very fast to me. But it should be considerably slower for you.
