Okay, I was confused by your email because in the Jmol 11.8.21 that I'm 
actually using, there is no StatusListener.java (but there is one in the 
11.9.35 sources, it turns out).

I had already seen the new callback functionality, though.  I just didn't 
realize that what I needed is data[2], because that doesn't seem to be 
used by any of the callback methods.  It wasn't until I found the place in 
the code that *calls* the callback method that I realized what is going 
on...

But at any rate, it looks like I have the problem solved at this point.
