I could get the regular production  signed applet to work on local files (OS X 
Mavericks/Safari) by trusting local files in the security/Manage web settings 
preference.  But replacing this .jar with Nico’s newly signed one indeed 
refuses to load. The spinning  Java logo does briefly appear, but then  a ! 
sign appears. Also Firefox.  No errors in the  Java console.

The same  signed applet works fine on a server.
