There is currently code in the g3d graphics subsystem which detects
whether the system Swing-capable. If the system is Swing-capable then it
uses BufferedImage operations instead of MemoryImageSource operations.

One would hope so.

However, at this point I suspect that the number of JVM 1.1 users is still
quite high. I did some googling, but was unable to find any specific
market share figures.

Admittedly, the general market share numbers may not accurately reflect
the target end-user audience for Jmol.

I think that we should continue to support 1.1 JVMs at least through
mid-2006.

I do not think that we should fork the code.

In general, I do not have any problems introducing features that only
function when Swing is available. For example, the Console that is
available on the Popup menu is only available under Swing.

No, it has not been discussed very much.

There are not too many users who understand the issues and are capable of
discussing it.

Finally, let me say that I personally would rather *not* put my time into
GUI-related enhancements ... so that leaves a big opportunity for other
developers to contribute to Jmol.
