This memo is for those of you who are interested in downloading the latest
*development* version of Jmol.

In summary:
 - use 'cvs checkout' to extract the Jmol project to your local system
 - the binaries JmolApplet.jar and jmol.jar are included
 - subsequently, you can use 'cvs update' to update your local copy

More detail:

Using the cvs (Concurrent Versions System) software, you extract the
latest source code + binaries from sourceforge. cvs is *the* version
control system for opensource development. Different systems have
different versions of cvs.
 - For MacOSX, cvs is included on the developer tools cd.
 - For Linux, install the cvs package
 - For Win32 + cygwin ... just like Linux
 - For Win32 ... I don't know ... never done it

For more information on cvs go to:
  http://cvsbook.red-bean.com/cvsbook.html
  http://cvshome.org

The FIRST time
--------------
Go to some directory that you like. We are going to create a subdirectory
under you called Jmol-HEAD

cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/jmol login
cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/jmol co -d Jmol-HEAD Jmol

'co' stands for 'checkout'
'-d Jmol-HEAD' says create a directory called Jmol-HEAD
'Jmol' is the name of the project

(The developers use Jmol-HEAD, so we suggest that you use the same)

The application is Jmol-HEAD/jmol.jar
The applet is Jmol-HEAD/JmolApplet.jar

They *should* always be up to date ... but this is the development version
and it might be broken ... caveat emptor.

The 2nd, 3rd, ... times
-----------------------
Now, you are going to do a 'cvs update' from within the Jmol-HEAD
directory. cvs knows which repository this came from, so you don't need to
login again

cd your-favorite-path-to/Jmol-HEAD
cvs up -dP

'up' stands for 'update'
'-dP' says 'look for new directories and Prune unused stuff'

Should be all you need. Let me know if I forgot something.

Miguel
