This .pdb bug has been fixed ... and I *thought* it was released in v8

Clearly you are right ... we need some way to display the version number.

(In the v10 code it shows up in the Java Console when the applet starts).

I suggest that you take a look at the current beta test of the upcoming
v10 release. Go to:
 http://jmol.sf.net/preview

Take a look at the preview demonstrations, they will show some of the
things you were asking about (dot surfaces, larger molecules)

If you think that this 'prerelease' code would be good enough for your
evaluation, then take a look at:
 http://jmol.sf.net/betatest
