Thanks for the pointer. I did some research and see that this Java1.3.1 vs 1.4 issue is more complex than just the installation of an update. I do run with 1.4 but it seems that most browsers are unable to use it even though it is present. It's too bad because safari is not my default browser. Fortunately though I am supplying the information to others and they run IE on Windows so, in the end, it isn't a big problem for me.
