I am going to try to state the right-hand axes orientation ... as I
understand it.

+X goes to the right
+Y goes up
+Z comes out of the screen and towards the user

Using the thumb, index finger, mid finger method ...
  palm is towards you
thumb points to the right -> +X
index finger points up -> +Y
middle finger points back at you -> +Z

> assuming each finger points in the positive direction, that puts +X to

Correct, +X to the left is wrong

> but maybe too much Chime exposure?

Also correct. Chime and RasMol 2.6 have the axis orientation wrong.
The problem is that the +Z axis points away from the user. This makes
Chime/RasMol left-handed.
  left-hand
  palm away
  thumb points right -> +X
index finger points up -> +Y
middle finger points away -> +Z

This is my understanding of the situation. I would appreciate it if I
could get independent confirmation that:
  1. my understanding of 'handedness' is correct
  2. my observations of RasMol/Chime are correct

Basically, I have spent a lot of time on this problem. But I would very
much like for someone else to look at it and confirm my observations.

Then, we can move on to the rotations ... a more difficult problem.
