I agree with your theory.  I have had much trouble with other applets in
Safari; specifically when it involves a lot of page reloading.  for
example, I had an applet that showed local doppler radar images.  they
updated the image very five min, so I wrote a page that reloaded the
page every 5 min (used a setTimeout in the body, similar to Phil's
page).  it would only run about an hour or so before crashing.
