And I want to put functionality into the applet so that people can use it without writing scripts. Hence the measurement functionality.
I agree that this is very good for power users (perhaps 1% of the potential Jmol users).
However, the vast majority of people who can benefit from using Jmol (students, educators, and nearly all researchers, in my experience, 99%!) will not be able to remember any mouse gestures except left click to drag for rotation
To avoid making Jmol's power inaccessible to these, we need commands to control everything that is also accessible with a complex mouse gesture. Then, in Protein Explorer, I can set the simple left mouse clicks to do anything the user wants, using menus.
This is why commands for set picking ident/distance/monitor/label/etc. are crucial, in addition to any mouse gestures.
I also agree with Tim that where there are mouse gestures common to RasMol and Chime it would be nice to have them in Jmol, at least in compatibility mode. We envision a slow transition from Chime-based resources to Jmol, using both concurrently for years. Differences in mouse gestures would be painful.
Therefore if Shift left Drag changes (e.g. to select multiple, as Tim suggested) it would be best to keep it for Zoom in compatibility mode -- that is the one mouse gesture that perhaps 5% of Chime/RasMol users can remember.
