Hey folks,

OK, I downloaded XCode and created Jmol.app per Tim & Henry's instructions, and it worked! So now I have a Jmol application that MacOS X recognizes as an application.

Now the bad news.

Netscape 7.1: I could create a MIME type and extension and give the browser instructions as to which app to use with that MIME type or extension, and even whether to hand off the URL. I did get it to launch Jmol upon browsing to a MOL file on the ACS Web site, but it would not hand the URL to Jmol. Also, for some unfathomable reason, the Paste function (COMMAND-V) doesn't work in Jmol, so I can't even copy the URL from Netscape and paste it into Jmol. (Why in the world doesn't it work? I have NEVER before seen an application where Paste doesn't work! Miguel told me a reason a few days ago, but it didn't make sense to me. Perhaps my own ignorance.)

Opera 7.50 beta (released today): Same as Netscape 7.1, but in addition, it kept forgetting the preferences I had set every time I quit and restarted, and sometimes it didn't even follow my instructions. Ugh. However, I did succeed in getting it to pass the MOL files to ChemDraw Pro 8.0, which it called the "default app" for MOL files. But there does not yet exist a Chem3D for MacOS X -- another reason we need Jmol.

Safari: I still can't find a way to get Safari to hand a file off to an application. I think a plug-in is the only hope for Safari. The good programmers at schubert-it.com have donated to the world the PDF Browser and Word Browser plug-ins for Safari (Adobe Reader doesn't work) -- perhaps they can be talked into creating one for Jmol.

iCab: Like Safari.

Explorer: Is asking for four-letter file type and file creator before I can designate a helper app. Otherwise it downloads it and opens it with ChemDraw.

OmniWeb: Haven't tried.

(I tried to change the default app for MOL files from ChemDraw to Jmol in the Finder's Get Info window, but it wouldn't recognize Jmol as an application.)

So, is there a flaw in Jmol that prevents it from accepting a URL from Netscape or Opera? Or is this a flaw in the MacOS X software itself?
