backbone bug which Jan reported is now FIXED.

It respects the 'bondmode' setting of 'and' or 'or'

I think that both
residues had to be selected to draw a backbone, which would be
compatible with RasMol2.7.2 or Chime

This is a bug.

[snip]

Q: Do you think that this should respect the 'bondmode', or should it
always require that both CA atoms be selected?

yes, as in RasMol2.7.2 but extend to both ends (but maybe in the case of
directed backbone 'bonds' a new operator ...)
set bondmode or

would allow backbone drawn from {n-1}.CA-{n}.CA-{n+1}.CA

two backbone-'bonds' are drawn with the (only) selected {n}.CA in the center

I don't understand what you mean.

Q: What do you mean by 'extend to both ends' ?

Trace extends to the terminal atoms. Backbone does not do that ... I do
not think it should.

I think backbone should unlike trace extend to the neighboring (unselected) *.CA atoms if
bondmode or
is set.

Q: What do you mean by a 'new directed backbone bonds operator' ?

set bondmode Cterminal
would result in the current Jmol 10pre10l behavior
