Giving the user feedback during the applet download process is a good thing.

Unfortunately, it does not work on IE with the MSFT JVM.

Perhaps I made it 'required' in a fit of madness.

If I get too much customer backlash then I will try to come up with a
better scheme.

The longer-term solution is for Jmol to provide a JavaScript .js library
that makes it easier to define instances of the applet. Then we can
include these params as part of that library & it will not impose too much
burden on web app developers.
