While the dual assignment works, I wonder if assigning left-mouse drag with x, y, or z, as modifier keys might not give more independent control in all three axes?

Shift-left click and drag. it is buddied up with zoom at the moment;
IIRC z rotation is controlled by moving your mouse pointer horizontally,
zoom vertically. but maybe its the reverse...
