Jeff,

I have also had problems with Safari and Java since updating, first to Update 1, then to Update 2. The problems are not as severe with Update 2, but they still exist. Generally, the problem occurs when I try to load an applet (MarvinSketch) that resides within a frame. I can upload the same applet outside a frame without any problem. The problem doesn't occur at every URL that displays the applet within a frame, and, if I load the applet from a no-frame URL before going to the URL that gives me the problem, everything usually works OK. Also, a colleague who is supposedly using exactly the same system/browser/Java configuration as I doesn't seem to have the same problems, although he does say that the page is slow to load, as someone else described the Jmol page in question here.

The problem, by the way, is sometimes a crash and sometimes just a hang of that page loading. In the latter case, I can close that page and Safari is still operative. Another piece of information: although the Javascript and Java on every instance of the problem page are the same (only the text and hyperreferences differ), some instances of the page are problematic, and some are not.

Here's how you can get to a URL that causes me problems:

(1) Go to http://epoch.pearsoncmg.com/lite, and login as guest, password PHfunds100%! (include the !).
(2) Click Course home next to Organic Chemistry Demo Course.
(3) Press the Assignments button.
(4) Click Do assignment next to MarvinSketch tutorial.
(5) Scroll down to question 12 and press Solve.

If Safari crashes, you have the same problem as I do. Clicking on other questions may or may not cause Safari to crash. Once you load a question successfully, you should be able to load question 12 without any problem.

I don't know how helpful this information is, but at least it lets you know that you're not imagining things. ;-) Let me know if you learn anything.
