accept these, since, as you say, we pride ourselves in its being able to
figure out the file type independent of any extension. This is a very common
file output type from the PDB database. It IS annoying, but it is very easy to do exactly what Bill did and "think" you are getting a pdb file. A very slight modification should do the trick.

It turns out that this is a .html file, not a .pdb file. Now RasMol/Chime will accept it as a .pdb file because you (implicitly or explicitly) tell it that you are loading a file of type .pdb
RasMol/Chime then effectively ignores the lines that do not contain recognized record types in the first 6 columns.
Jmol, on the other hand, automatically figures out the file type. We think that it is a significant feature that one can load files without knowing the file type ... and without having to have the extension correct.
If it is the case that there are still database servers that are returning '.pdb' files that are formatted this way then they should be updated to return the files using the mime type Content-type:text/plain
