Miguel,
Q: I assume that IE 5.1 on Mac OS 9 does not support LiveConnect communications between JavaScript and Java applets ... please confirm.
No it doesn't. At least, according to all the literature. Is there a test page somewhere?
Q: Is there any Java Applet support under Mozilla 1.2 on OS 9?
Yes, as long as you install the MRJ plugin. The last build of Mozilla for OS9 is about the only thing on OS9 that can be used for molecular graphic work. It takes the Chime plugin, runs applets (although is a bit crash-prone) has reasonable css support, and doesn't have the css float refresh problem I mentioned with IE5.1. I *assume* Moz 1.2 supports LC, but I wouldn't swear to it.
I put a lot of energy into making sure that the JmolApplet runs on Netscape 4.7 on OS 9.
I'm sorry, although it is still on those boxes, NS4.7 is dead. None of the web designers are supporting it any more - using css that kills it - so that nobody practically is using it. I decided to pull the plug on it for the Protein Motif database front-end I developed recently when I found it gave me problems with my servlet. Made it a lot easier to design a modern standards-compliant site (except for the jmol pages :-( ).
However, performance is so poor and I ran into so many problems that I consider it an 'unsupported' platform.
Yes. I imagine a few instructors find it useful in clusters they control. And very likely they are not concerned with css and validation.
