Q: Does anyone actually use this zoom on/off functionality?
I didn't know it existed either. "zoom off" seems to be equivalent to "zoom 100". The value/purpose of "zoom on" is not immediately obvious (due to bugs?).
In Chime (and probably RasMol 2.6 but I haven't tested it) "zoom off" seems to do the same thing to the zoom level as "reset", but the latter also resets XYZ rotations.
"zoom off" does not disable zoom. Both zoom commands and moused-zooming work following a "zoom off". In Chime, "zoom on" zooms to a large arbitrary value which may somehow be related to the inital scaling of "zoom 100", but seems unrelated to the previous zoom level or boolean state. My "zoom on" tests gave these zoom levels (reported by "view show user"):
1fdl, 988.797 (max 1870's, it varies slightly) 1d66, 818.018 (max 1520's-1530's, it varies) olestra-like molecule, 510.514 (max 918) 1b07, 441.698 (max 780's) atp, 290.098 (max 380's) 1 atom, 100 (max 100)
"max" means the maximum moused zoom that can be achieved.
